Gear Shop Brisbane opened up in January 2009, founded by a dutch national, who found his way to Australia in 2008. Over the last 4 years the shop has grown considerably from stocking just a few completes and frames to stocking over a 12+ completes on rotation, countless frames and parts as well as distributing for Leader Bike USA and Colossi. They have only 23 square metres of floor space and have squeezed stock into every space possible including a fully functioning workshop. What sets Gear Brisbane apart it it stocks a range of street wear and accessories from brands such as Cadence, Chrome SF, Mission Workshop and of course Orontas. The store is literally packed to the rafters with every fixed gear product imaginable from vintage steel frames to newer fixed gear bikes. Gear Brisbane is not your average bike shop.
Orontas: How long have you been open?
GSB: We have been open for 4 years. The construction began in October 2008 and the store opened in January of 2009.
O: What neighborhood are you in?
GSB: Gear Shop Brisbane, is located in West End, Brisbane, Australia. We are a short pedal across the bridge from the main CBD area.
O: Why did you choose this neighborhood?
GSB: West End was the only place we could see the shop opening. The neighbourhood has evolved a lot since we opened our doors, with West End becoming one of the more social destinations within Brisbane. West End is the cultural centre of Brisbane and we are happy to be part of that.
O: How would you describe the cycling scene in Brisbane?
GSB: The cycling scene in Brisbane is ever growing. There is quite a strong road riding culture, track is still alive and people are quickly realising that the bicycle is a much more affordable way to get around as the price of public transport increases. We are quite lucky to live in this part of the world! We don’t get any snow and the cold weather we do get, is considered warm by most. We are blessed to be able to ride all year round!
