48×17 is a project space based in central Athens devoted to urban cycling, whatever form it might take: fixed gear, road racers, cyclocross or just commuting bikes. It was founded by people that met within the local bike community then moved on either to bike messengering or sports cycling.
Inspired by the rise of the global urban bike movement as well as past giants such as Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, Koichi Nakano and Michael Hübner, it aims to celebrate the passion found in this romantic era of cycling.
As a commercial space 48×17 focuses on three axis: aesthetics, functionality, value. It wishes to act as a meeting point of the people passionately involved in the local bike community, providing high quality specialized services, custom built bikes, in-house framebuilding and a careful selection of technical clothing and gear by independent as well as high-end brands.
O: How long have you been open now?
48×17: 2 years
O: Which neighborhood is your store located?
48×17: Acropolis, Athens citycentre
O: Why did you choose this neighborhood?
48×17: We chose the location in order to be in a central but cozy and friendly neighborhood. Being under the ancient rock is magnificent.
O:How would you describe the scene in Athens?
48×17: Cycling scene in Athens is growing. There are a few group rides on a weekly basis and also a few groups that organise events, races and demos. Athens is still a brutal city to ride a bike, a lot of polution and a lot of car violence against cyclists and pedestrians that the police is doing nothing for. However, the cycling scene is growing.
